CES 2019: Samsung Galaxy S10 coming with ultrasonic sensor for in-display fingerprint recognition made by Qualcomm.

Chinese smartphones manufacturers are making the in display fingerprint sensor with a optical way technology and it is not more accurate than the ultrasonic in display fingerprint  sensor technology that Qualcomm is offering to Samsung.

How this ultrasonic sensor technology works?

It works by transmitting an ultrasonic pulse against the finger to map the pores and ridges that are unique to each fingerprint. This lets the sensor collect additional depth data for accurate 3D reproduction of the fingerprint to ensure higher accuracy.

The display panel will be supplied by Samsung Display  and Qualcomm is said to be supplying the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor.

This is the first time we are hearing about Qualcomm making it. On before news Samsung was supposed  making it and that will use it not only on smartphones but on smart home devices, home appliances and automobiles, as well.

However recent news confirmed Samsung is adopting the Qualcomm`s technology.

"Samsung Electronics has decided to commercialize the display fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S10," Samsung Electronics said in a statement. "We know Samsung Display is in charge of the display and Qualcomm is in the spotlight." Display Fingerprint recognition is the key to making fingerprints visible on the display without exposing the sensor to the outside. Samsung OLED reportedly an implementation of the display fingerprint in such a manner as to position the ultrasonic sensor on the back (OLED) panel. Qualcomm will be responsible for the supply of ultrasonic sensors and Samsung Display will be responsible for manufacturing the S10 panel and attaching the sensor to the panel. The ultrasound method is a technology for discriminating fingerprint shapes and features by changing the intensity and position of ultrasonic waves. Due to the nature of the ultrasonic transmission through objects, the sensor can be operated from the back of the panel. Samsung Electronics uses ultrasonic technology because the sensor is not exposed to the outside and has less influence on the panel structure and image quality.

Besides that , Samsung is working in more exciting new features for the 10th anniversary smartphone Galaxy S10 which will be unveiled at CES 2019 just before the MWC 2019 where the company is going to unveil its foldable smartphone.

Apple next trio of smartphones might arrive this fall with new 7nm chips so called A12. Maybe not the 3 of them but at least  2 of the new models of the iPhone X with OLED display.

Actual iPhone 8/8+ and iPhone X have a 10 nm chip.

The 7nm chips are more capable,  help smartphones run apps faster and last longer before having to be recharged, key advantages in a competitive industry .

The new chips are made by TSMC for Apple and its production has already started.

Samsung is also thinking to include its new 7nm chips for its new smartphones.

Samsung will start the production of the new 7 nanometer (nm) chip with a new technology. Before chips were made with 14, 12 and 10 nm the most recent.

The chips industry for around 50 years is trying to find  the best way to improve performance shrinking the width of chip circuits.

Extreme ultraviolet lithography is a new technique that could sustain progress, but chipmakers have been been trying to perfect it for about a decade.
ASML Holding NV is the main supplier of EUV lithography machines, and Samsung is confident it has improved the output of this equipment enough for mass production. The Korean giant managed to make more than 1,000 disks of silicon using EUV each day, the company said at an event in Santa Clara, California, on Tuesday. The ability to use EUV, which eliminates production steps, separates Samsung from from its rivals, said Hong Hao, a company senior vice president.

The world’s largest chipmaker said it will begin using the new technique this year, in time for mass production for customers next year.

Microsoft introduces the Surface Hub 2. Video.

The New Surface Hub 2 is all about Collaborative working team, in real time, improves creativity and productivity, to get a high performing, in business.

The Surface Hub 2 has a 4K+ 50.5” multi-touch display creates an inviting canvas to co-create, harnessing the power of Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Whiteboard, Office 365, Windows 10 and the intelligent cloud. The 4K cameras that rotate with the device, integrated speakers and far field mic arrays allow everyone in the meeting to feel as if they are right in the room with the rest of the group, while our standard Surface 3×2 aspect ratio means everyone has more usable space to create and collaborate.

Press Release:

Meet Surface Hub 2.

By Panos Panay / Chief Product Officer

A new culture of work is emerging. One where unlocking the power of the team has never been more important. I see it with our team daily. People coming together, creating together. Making products stronger through collaboration, whether they’re in the same room or separated by thousands of miles.

Today’s most effective businesses have a team-based, collaborative culture and place an emphasis on enabling creativity and productivity. In fact, companies that promote collaborative working are five times as likely to be high-performing.

It’s not just that how we work is changing, it’s that where we work is changing too. The environment around us is shifting – towards open offices, huddle rooms, and team work spaces – in fact, in three years, half the global workforce will be mobile. It’s an exciting time to be in the devices business, because the creation of new form factors and software experiences will not only lead us to work in new ways, but also in new spaces designed for collaboration.

There is a need for a device built for teams and designed for these new environments. To help people collaborate whether they are in the office, at home, or travelling the world. To move beyond just passing along information, to a world where they are collaborating real-time, in an efficient, and intuitive way.

Today, I’m excited to introduce that device, the next generation – Surface Hub 2.

Unlock the power of the team.

Surface Hub 2 was designed from the ground up to be used by teams – to get people out of their seats, to connect and ideate, regardless of location. The new Surface Hub 2 is sleeker, more agile and more affordable to fit any workspace or work style. The gorgeous 4K+ 50.5” multi-touch display creates an inviting canvas to co-create, harnessing the power of Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Whiteboard, Office 365, Windows 10 and the intelligent cloud. The 4K cameras that rotate with the device, integrated speakers and far field mic arrays allow everyone in the meeting to feel as if they are right in the room with the rest of the group, while our standard Surface 3×2 aspect ratio means everyone has more usable space to create and collaborate.

Perfect for any space.

Surface Hub 2 scales and adapts to your space through tiling up to 4 screens together in portrait or landscape view.  Dynamic rotation allows you to use the best orientation for your content to help people work in the way that best suits them and the people they are collaborating with. It is also significantly easier to move around your workspaces than its predecessor. We’ve teamed up with workplace expert Steelcase to create a system of rolling stands and easy-to-use mounts to help Surface Hub 2 customers be truly mobile, gain a new perspective and capture their ideas wherever they do their best work.

The magic of tiling.

Tiling is one of my favorite features on Surface Hub 2. Seeing four of the beautiful Surface Hub 2s lined up together has undeniable visual effect and will have a profound impact on what groups can accomplish together, allowing users to display multiple pieces of content side-by-side. Imagine how much your team could get done being able to work simultaneously across Microsoft Whiteboard, PowerBI, PowerPoint, and a full view video call.

Move beyond meetings, to real-time teamwork.

We’re passionate about creating experiences that allow the technology to fade into the background, so people and teams can be as productive and creative as possible. The original Surface Hub advanced this mission, making it possible to join a meeting or open a whiteboard with one touch. Now Surface Hub 2 takes it even further with multi-user sign in.

This feature is a truly magical experience. Using multi-user sign in, multiple people can authenticate in the same Surface Hub 2 workspace, allowing them to simultaneously access their documents and ideas, merging them with the ideas of their teammates – and making collaboration as natural as meeting at a whiteboard.

The future of collaboration is coming.

We started on the journey of empowering teams with the original Surface Hub and the value it provides has resonated with businesses worldwide. We’ve sold to more than 5000 customers across 25 markets. Over half of Fortune 100 companies have purchased Surface Hubs to improve team’s efficiency and how they collaborate – breaking down barriers and creating real business value. We believe our customers will love Surface Hub 2 even more.

In 2018 we will begin to test Surface Hub 2 with select commercial customers. It will be available for purchase in 2019. For additional information on Surface Hub 2 please visit: microsoft.com/en-us/surface/business/surface-hub-2

It`s Official: LG launches the Google Assistant on 2018 AI TVs. Combines with LG’s award-winning webOS based ThinQ AI.

Press Release:

LG LAUNCHES THE GOOGLE ASSISTANT ON 2018 AI-ENABLED TVS

Activation of the Google Assistant Drives LG’s Critically-Acclaimed 4K UHD TVs.

Into the Connected Home Ecosystem with Cutting-Edge AI Services

SEOUL, May 8, 2018 — First announced at CES 2018, the Google Assistant is now available on LG’s 2018 AI TV line-up. This includes both LG OLED TVs and LG SUPER UHD TVs with ThinQ AI, which will deliver cutting-edge AI features operated directly through the TV’s remote control with no additional hardware required. The collaboration between Google and LG will add more convenience in consumers’ lives, and the synergistic effects from this technology partnership positively impacting LG’s award-winning TVs.

The Google Assistant combines with LG’s award-winning webOS based ThinQ AI to bring new levels of convenience and control to the consumer. This enables 2018 LG TVs to deliver an intuitive AI experience that uses natural language commands to control TV functions, seamlessly discover and play content, and control TV settings. With the Google Assistant, you can ask it to help manage daily tasks, access information, control compatible smart home devices including lighting, appliances and much more.

Beginning this year, LG and Google began collaborating to develop a wide range of features and are working on expanding consumer accessibility in multiple languages. By adding the Google Assistant to the webOS platform of LG’s 2018 AI TVs, the advanced machine learning and natural language processing technologies that Google is known for will simplify life for consumers worldwide. LG’s implementation reflects the importance the company places on creating and providing a more complete, accessible and diverse range of AI services.

LG’s 2018 AI TVs can perform hundreds of voice commands utilizing the company’s own open smart platform as well as the built in Google Assistant. With LG’s proprietary ThinQ AI users can immediately connect to external gaming consoles and soundbars (“Connect to soundbar”), they can switch picture mode (“Change to Cinema Mode”) or turn the TV off at set times.

Additionally, searching for content is even simpler and more convenient with LG TVs. LG AI-enabled TVs can instantly retrieve information or switch to a channel that offers the content requested by the viewer. “Switch to Discovery channel” instantly connects one to information about future travel destinations. Users can learn more about their desired films simply by saying a character’s or actor’s name, they can tell the TV to “Search for the soundtrack of this movie” or “Turn off the TV when this program is over” without needing to schedule a time.

With the Google Assistant built in, LG’s AI TVs offer users a streamlined experience that allows them to manage different tasks, find answers, or control smart home devices. Simply press and hold the mic button and ask for information such as the weather forecast (“What’s the weather this weekend?”), nearby local businesses, or check the score of the big game without disturbing the viewing experience. Users can relive their favorite moments by displaying memories from Google Photos. Services such as food delivery and transportation will also be easier with the addition of third-party Actions available in the near future.

With help from the Google Assistant, LG’s AI TVs can serve as the center of your smart home, offering access to devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners, thermostats, air purifiers, smart lighting devices and many more. The Google Assistant works with more than 5,000 smart devices across hundreds of popular brands making it easier to control smart speakers and other devices connected via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

LG OLED TVs and LG SUPER UHD TVs with ThinQ AI and the Google Assistant will be available in the United States starting in May with key markets in Europe and Asia to follow.

“With the Google Assistant now available natively in 2018 LG AI TVs, I believe we’re going to see a whole new level of AI adoption in the home,” said Brian Kwon, president of LG’s Home Entertainment Company. “LG’s unique partnership with Google allows us to be the first TV brand to offer the Google Assistant on our own OS which is a huge benefit for customers who are fans of webOS. With great partners like Google, we expect there to be many more exciting AI news to come from LG.”

LG’s 2018 AI TVs also work with existing Google Assistant devices such as Google Home and other smart speakers with the Assistant built in, allowing users to send voice commands directly from a separate Assistant device to their LG TV. TV owners can speak to other Assistant devices to control TV functions such as volume, play, pause, start, stop, fast forward, channel selection, content search, among many others. LG’s 2018 AI-enabled TVs will work with other Google Assistant devices in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia with further expansion to be announced later this year.

LG OLED TV with AI (Artificial Intelligence) ThinQ® has the Google Assistant built in, so your TV can be the center of your smart home. Ask your Assistant to help manage daily tasks like scheduling calendar events or adding items to your shopping list. See answers to things you want to know, including the weather forecast or game scores. Or, control your smart home devices such as change light settings, check room temperature and more.

Samsung`s "Project Valley" for foldable smartphone changes code name to Project "WINNER". Might launch at MWC 2019.

It seems Samsung is making good progress with the foldable smartphone that was originaly code named as PROJECT VALLEY (also known as Galaxy X) 3 years ago, and has changed the code  name of it to Project WINNER.

Industry watchers think Samsung is moving beyond the development stage and is seriously going to release the foldable smartphone.

Samsung has informed to its suppliers to start supplying components for the mobile from November 2018. If that is correct the company is planning to unveil the smartphone at MWC 2019 (since there are rumors about the Galaxy S10 to be launched at CES 2019 in January) and make available  around 500.000 units to test the market first and confirm demand in order to increase production.

The report is saying that the foldable smartphone will have three  3.5 OLED screens,  two of them will be inside and one on the outside

For me that phone is the trifold smartphone latest patent granted to Samsung of which we posted yesterday as Samsung challenge competitors with a thrifold Smartphone patent granted.  You can see  the picture posted below:

LG introduces the G7 ThinQ AI smartphone. Product Video. Specifications. Press Release.

LG G7 THINQ OFFERS DEEP AI INTEGRATION FOR MAXIMUM USER CONVENIENCE.

A Complete Premium Smartphone with the Most Advanced Processor,

Brilliant Display, Booming Audio and Intelligent Camera.

NEW YORK, May 2, 2018 — LG Electronics (LG) today introduced its latest premium smartphone, the LG G7 ThinQ, focusing on bringing useful and convenient AI features to the fundamental consumer smartphone experience.

Powered by the latest Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 845 Mobile Platform, the LG G7 ThinQ offers 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of internal storage to run even the most demanding tasks and apps with ease. Equipped with a stunning 6.1-inch bright display has is nearly half an inch larger than its predecessor but not a hair wider, the LG G7 ThinQ is sized perfectly to be used with one hand.

Sporting a new design aesthetic for the G series, the polished metal rim gives the LG G7 ThinQ a sleeker, more polished look, complemented by Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and the back for enhanced durability. Again rated IP68 for dust and water resistance, the LG G7 ThinQ was designed to meet the requirements of MIL-STD 810G tests designed by the United States military to evaluate the performance of equipment in harsh environments.

Upgraded Camera with More Intelligence

The LG G7 ThinQ has been upgraded with an 8MP camera up front and 16MP lenses on the back in both standard and Super Wide Angle configurations for higher resolution photos with more details. LG’s signature wide angle camera now captures even more beautiful landscapes with less edge distortion and selfies are clearer and look more natural compared with previous LG phones.

LG has further enhanced the AI features of the camera that first debuted in the LG V30S ThinQ. AI CAM now offers 19 shooting modes, up from eight, for even more intelligence-optimized shots. And users can improve their photos further by choosing among three other effect options if the one recommended by AI CAM doesn’t suit their tastes.

Low light photography on the LG G7 ThinQ is taken to a whole new level with the new Super Bright Camera with images that are up to four times brighter typical of photos shot in dim light. Through the combination of pixel binning and software processing, the AI algorithm adjusts the camera settings automatically when shooting in low light.

LG has also added new features that make photography on the LG G7 ThinQ even more enjoyable than ever. Live Photo mode records one second before and after the shutter is pressed for snippets of unexpected moments or expressions that would normally be missed. Stickers uses face recognition to generate fun 2D and 3D overlays such as sunglasses and headbands that can be viewed directly on the display.

New to the G series, Portrait mode generates professional looking shots with out-of-focus backgrounds. This bokeh effect can be generated using either the standard or Super Wide Angle lens, giving shutterbugs even more creative options.

Easier and Smarter With AI

LG G7 ThinQ will be one of the first devices to get upcoming Google Lens features. Google Lens is a new way to search using the latest in AI and computer vision. Available inside the Google Assistant and Google Photos, it can deliver more information on objects such as landmarks, plants, animals, books as well as identify text. Visit websites, add a business card to contacts, add events to the calendar or look up an item on a restaurant menu – all right from Google Lens. More details on Google Lens will be revealed at Google I/O.

Located just below the volume is a button that launches the phone’s AI functions. A single tap of this button will launch the Google Assistant while two quick taps will launch Google Lens, a first on any phone. Users can also hold down the button to start talking to the Google Assistant.

With Super Far Field Voice Recognition (SFFVR) and the smartphone’s highly sensitive microphone, the Google Assistant can recognize voice commands from up to five meters away. SFFVR is able to separate commands from background noise, making the LG G7 ThinQ a great alternative to a home AI speaker even when the TV is on. LG customer commands for the Google Assistant have been increased in the LG G7 ThinQ so users can get even more stuff done with their voice alone.

Super Bright Display Outshines the Competition

The first thing customers will notice about the LG G7 ThinQ will likely be the new 6.1-inch QHD+ (3120 x 1440) display sporting a 19.5:9 FullVision screen ratio and a bottom bezel which is almost 50 percent slimmer than on the LG G6. Powered by LG’s new LCD technology, Super Bright Display, the LG G7 ThinQ can be viewed easily even under direct sunlight with brightness up to an industry-leading 1,000 nit, displaying 100 percent DCI-P3 color gamut.

And depending on the type of content, the display can be set to six different viewing modes: Auto, Eco, Cinema, Sports, Game and Expert. In Auto mode, the phone automatically analyzes the content of games or photos and optimizes the display and power consumption. The user can fine tune the image even further by adjusting the screen temperature and RGB levels individually.

The smartphone’s New Second Screen gives users flexible options when it comes to setting up the display to fit their tastes and style. The display can be fully expanded for a bezel-less look or it can be set to a more traditional style where the notification bar is completely blacked out. Users can even change the notification bar to another color for a more personal effect.

Unmatched Audio Experience in a Smartphone Continuing LG’s commitment to deliver unrivaled audio experience on its smartphones, the LG G7 ThinQ offers premium audio innovations that remains unmatched in the industry. Available for the first time in the LG G7 ThinQ , Boombox Speaker utilizes the internal space of the LG G7 ThinQ as a resonance chamber to deliver double the bass of conventional smartphones for powerful “boombox” sound without the need for external speakers. When placed on a solid surface or box, the smartphone utilizes its resonance chamber as a woofer to amplify the bass effect even more.

The LG G7 ThinQ is also the first smartphone to offer DTS:X to deliver virtual 3D sound for all content, up to 7.1 channel audio with earphones. Carrying on the heritage of LG’s focus on great smartphone sound, the LG G7 ThinQ is equipped with a Hi-Fi Quad DAC for incredibly rich sound especially when paired with high-impedance earphones.“The LG G7 ThinQ is strongly focused on the fundamentals and its launch marks a new chapter for our company,” said Hwang Jeong-hwan, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Through the combination of personalized and useful AI functionalities with meaningful smartphone features, this is LG’s most convenient smartphone yet.”

The LG G7 ThinQ will roll out in the coming days in South Korea followed by major markets in North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. Price and purchase details will be announced locally closer to the time of availability.
