RIM opens BBMessenger Social Platform beta

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

RIM announced beta availability of its BlackBerry Messenger Social Platform, which it said “means that the BlackBerry developer community can now take advantage of the powerful social aspects of the ultra popular BBM service.”

The release will provide Java developers with access to APIs and features enabling them to access and update fields in a user’s profile, create custom areas within the profile, initiate and embed chats with friends, initiate file transfers, and share apps virally with friends on their contact list.

The features are permission-based. The company first announced its plans to open BBM to developers last year, in order to enable app developers to easily add social features to their products.

Developers will be provided with the ability to test the exact workflow and BBM integration that they can expect to see on live devices.

This is being delivered by special simulators for BlackBerry devices running OS 5.0 and OS 6.0. RIM said that more developers will be able to take advantage of the BBM Social Platform from April 2011, when support for the BlackBerry WebWorks platform will be added.
